Demographics of Hall County, Georgia

Georgia Map showing Hall County Hall County, Georgia was formed December 15, 1818, as the 44th county, from Franklin and Jackson Counties, and Cherokee Lands. 

It was named for Lyman Hall (1724-90), American Revolutionary War leader, born in Wallingford, Connecticutt.   He was a signer of the Declaration of Independence, and the 9th Governor of Georgia who served in 1783-85.

The county seat (and largest city) is Gainesville, which may have been named for early settlers in the area, or for General Edmund P. Gaines, who arrested Aaron Burr for treason.

Gainesville, Lula, Flowery Branch, Clermont, Gillsville, Chestnut Mountain, Murrayville, and Oakwood.  Gainesville is home for Gainesville State College and Brenau University.


County Area: 394 sq. mi. (1020 km. sq.); 58th largest county in Georgia (tied with Jones County)
